Sony Pictures have just recently released the official full trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 3D. Now starring Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker, the reboot to the fan favorite comic book franchise also features Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, the chief intern at Oscorp, instead of Mary Jane Watson as Peter’s love interest. It also re-begins the story of Peter’s transformation to Spider-Man by starting with a younger and still alive uncle Ben, played by Martin Sheen.
The plot begins when Peter discovers a clue that could tell him the cause of his parents’ disappearance. This leads him right to his father’s former partner Dr. Curt Connors, an OsCorp scientist and Gwen’s mentor, played by Rhys Ifans, whom he invariably helps transform into The Lizard.
What choices does Peter have to make to become a hero? How does he use his new-found powers to discover the truth behind his vanished parents and to defeat the overly strong menace of The Lizard?
Those are all interesting questions that we’ll probably see answered when the movie rolls out in June. But more probably more important to ask is how this reboot will fare against the Spider-Man trilogy by Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire. Fans have reacted that though they really don’t want another origin story, they’re open to the new presentation of their favorite web-slinging superhero.
Some cool trivia:
- Emma Stone (Gwen Stacy) and Sally Field (Aunt May) share the same birthday.
- Both Tobey Maguire (the original Spider-Man) and Andrew Garfield had starred in a Terry Gilliam film before nabbing the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Maguire appeared in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Garfield appeared in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, both films also featuring Johnny Depp.
- For his role as the Lizard, Rhys Ifans wore a special motion-capture suit: “I had a green suit on, and then this cardboard head, and these big claws. It was the most f**king insane thing I’d ever done…”
- Unlike the Sam Raimi-helm trilogy, most of Spider-Man’s signature abilities such as climbing, swinging and acrobatics are provided by Andrew Garfield and stunt men instead of using CGI animation.
- The film will be the first Hollywood production to be filmed with the RED Epic camera.
