While in training, the Tigers expect to address the issue as to who will replace Brad Penny in the starting rotation. General manager Dave Dombrowski has mentioned several in-house candidates, including Jacob Turner, Drew Smyly, Andy Oliver, Casey Crosby, Duane Below and Adam Wilke. He added, “I feel comfortable that, let’s just say a Below or a Wilk, if they were the No. 5 starter, that they would do a job for us out there. They, however, unless something really surprises me, don’t have the overall upside of a guy like a Jacob Turner.”

The Tigers are the defending AL Central champion, having won their division title last season by 15 games. Recently, they added free agent slugger Prince Fielder to their roster. With Fielder and Miguel Cabrera in the middle of the batting order, Detroit can expect to score its share of runs. However, the team still faces some uncertainty, such as it’s not yet clear who the No. 5 starter will be. Also, manager Jim Leyland will have an interesting task each game when he decides how to align his defense. Dombrowski though is optimistic. Said he, “We do have the capabilities to mix and match from a defensive perspective, but our club is meant to thump, We’re meant to hit. That’s how we’re going to win or lose.”

With Cabrera, Fielder and Justin Verlander, Detroit has three of the game’s biggest stars, all in their primes. Verlander won the American League Cy Young Award and MVP last year, and Cabrera was the AL batting champion. All-Star catcher Alex Avila also emerged last year as a power threat and shortstop Jhonny Peralta had a fine season as well.

To accomodate Fielder at first base, the Tigers are moving Cabrera to third. For a team that did not always excel defensively last year, there could be some risk with that move. However, it seems that Detroit believes the risk is offset by the reward of having those two big bats in the lineup. With designated hitter Victor Martinez expected to miss the season with a knee injury, Leyland will have some flexibility based on how he uses the DH spot.

For example, if Cabrera is the DH for a day, either Brandon Inge or Don Kelly could play third base. Detroit can also play Ramon Santiago at second base instead of Ryan Raburn in case defense there is a major concern. Said Dombrowski, “We could play a very good defensive club up the middle if you play Santiago at second base. If we choose, we could play a very good defensive club.”

For players such as Inge, Kelly, Santiago and outfielder Andy Dirks, this spring training will be their first chance this year to try to show that they deserve playing time alongside Detroit’s front-line talents.

The Tigers will have their first Grapefruit League exhibition match on March 2 against Florida Southern.

Caracol is an archeological site that should not be missed; its highest peak Ca’ana is not only the site of the largest temple but affords one a spectacular view of the rainforest below. Indeed the climb can be a challenge but the untamed rainforest of Belize can be worth it.

A true Mayan culture exposure should however not be limited to visiting archaeological sites. There are plenty more activities to consider that will immerse one in the preserved culture of the Mayan people. A visit to a Mayan kiln offers an opportunity to learn pottery while visits to a village will reveal how a traditional rice and bean dish is prepared.

With a stunning Caribbean beach, colorful reef, untamed rainforests and mysterious caves, there is no mystery as to why Belize is a mecca for adventurists. The country welcomes a large tourist crowd from November to May when it’s cold in most countries up north; ideally, these are also the best times to visit.

There are so many TV comedies right now and you can’t just possibly watch them all unless you’re without a job, can live without sleep and basically have no life at all. But for a show like “New Girl” which has something new and exciting to offer, then it is high time to adjust your TV comedy watching schedule.

“New Girl” stars Zooey Deschanel as adorable Jessica “Jess” Day, a bubbly and well-liked woman in her late 20’s who moved in with three guys to get over her breakup with her boyfriend after he cheated on her. The three guys of the apartment are: law student dropout turned bartender Nick Miller (Jake Johnson), Schmidt (Max Greenfield), a white-collar worker and modern-day Casanova and Winston (Lamorne Morris), a former basketball player who is rather competitive. Completing the cast will be Jess’ street smart model friend Cece (Hannah Simone).

The show received a lot of positive responses from critics and TV viewers especially towards Deschanel’s performance. Last year, the show was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy and Deschanel was also nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy.

Without any cheap tricks or annoying punch lines, “New Girl” can definitely make you smile. The characters have this amazing chemistry and they were able to pull it off on the first shows which are very critical. The main character “Jess” is adorably crazy and her personality is just so eccentric, endearing and funny. “Adorkable” has become the new catchphrase to describe this show and the character of Jess. And oddly enough it fits. She was very suitable for the character and the different personalities of the three guys and her best friend just clicks providing a very fresh batch of TV characters. It is a well-cast show with a talented writing team.

One challenge though is that you actually have to get past the “adorkable” of Jess else you will just be overly irritated with the character but beyond that, you will see the light hearted, non–serious comedy series that is a hit and miss.

The show has amazing potential although the writers need to make sure that the comic side is always fresh or it will fall flat. The main character “Jess” should also have some character development and soon because the other room mates have become open books already about their personalities but “Jess” appears to be lacking the growth that is needed.

Owning a pet reptile can also mean that at one point or another, you will be dealing with mites. This task can be very frustrating but there are ways in which you can quickly combat mites. Even if you keep your pet indoors, the vivarium won’t be exempted from mites because they can grow vigorously even with simple elements – moisture, warmth, and food. There are at least a thousand species of mites but there’s nothing to feel confused about because you can recognize them with ease.

First, there are mites that habituate in substrate. They often appear in a moist vivarium that has a wood or earth type of substrate. If they are only small in number, then they won’t present threats to your reptile. Even so, it will be practical to get rid of them before they multiply. This can be done by a simple yet regular cleaning of the substrate. This will ensure that mites won’t have a chance to grow rapidly because of leftover food and fecal matter. Dust mites are also known to survive under the same conditions. Since they love to feed on your pet’s uneaten food, you can control them by doing a habitual cleaning. Lastly, you may encounter the “tough guys”. Usually in brown or red color, these mites love to feast on reptile’s blood.

By close inspection, you can see if your pet is indeed a host to mites. You can treat a reptile by spraying a mite killer all over its surface. The sprays work by either irritating or suffocating the mites until they die. Each kind of mite killer works best for a specific type of reptile so make sure to read the labels especially the precautionary measures. When spraying the product, protect yourself with a mask and a pair of gloves. Let the product seep into the scales so that the mites will be targeted.

After giving proper care to your pet, it’s time to focus on the vivarium. Dispose the entire substrate including the branches which can house the mites. It is important to thoroughly wash the whole vivarium with hot soapy water. Apart from sanitation, the water’s temperature will kill the mites.

You don’t have to wait for a full-blown infestation before you start to act. The remedies for mites are simple if you start applying them early. Mites should not be disregarded because they can complicate your pet’s life in so many ways.

Ham and Cheese Pinwheel Wraps Recipe

Ingredients:

• 8 slices boiled ham
• 8 oz. cream cheese (softened at room temp.)
• 8 green onions
• Flour tortillas
• Honey mustard dressing (optional)

Preparation:

1. Use a paper towel to pat dry the ham.
2. Spread the softened cream cheese on top of the ham slices.
3. Snip off the green tops of the onions to fit the narrow end of each ham slice.
4. Place the green onions on the ham. Then place this over the flour tortillas.
5. Wrap in wax paper or plastic wrap. Refrigerate each ham and cheese roll.
6. To serve, cut the rolls to 1 inch size.
7. You can also serve this as main course. No need to slice to one inch slices and top with honey mustard dressing.

Another take to this classic sandwich is the ham and cheese quiche. With some grated cheddar cheese baked into some dinner crescent roll dough, your guests are sure to enjoy this ham and cheese appetizer too.

Mini Ham and Cheese Quiches Recipe

Ingredients:

• 3 eggs (slightly beaten)
• ¼ lb. deli ham (finely chopped)
• ¼ c. grated cheddar cheese
• 1 can. (8 oz.) Refrigerated Crescent dinner rolls
• 1 tbsp. parsley (chopped)

Preparation:

1. Pre-heat oven to 375⁰ F.
2. Combine the eggs, cheese, ham and parsley in a bowl.
3. Unroll the dough and divide into 4 rectangles. Press the perforations firmly to seal any openings or cracks
4. Cut the each rectangle into 6 squares. Place each square dough into the sides and bottom of a mini muffin pan. (use 24 holes)
5. Pour about 1 tablespoon of the ham egg mixture into the dough lined muffin pan. Once all of the dough has been filled, bake this in the pre-heated oven for 15 to 20 minutes or until the ham-egg mixture sets and quiches turn golden brown in color.

Ham and cheese can also be used to make appetizers that revolve around serving sandwiches. These recipes are a different take to this sandwich menu that you can also serve as appetizers too.

Dereck Chisora brawls with David Haye 

A press conference in Munich after a boxing event headlined by Vitali Klitschko and Dereck Chisora suddenly turned ugly when David Haye kept interrupting and igniting the situation. Chisora confronts him and a brawl ensues, resulting in injuries to the fighters as well as their coaches.

This revelation was included in its environmental footprint, which also added that the US Green Building Council has already given it an LEED Platinum certification. “We know of no other data center of comparable size that has achieved this level of LEED certification,” Apple told in its report. “Our goal is to run the Maiden facility with high percentage renewable energy mix.”

Apple was given the go ahead last October to remold the 171 acre vacant land right beside its Maiden, NC data center in preparation of the construction of the solar array. The permits were granted by Catawba County but had no details about the project itself. Since then, the report Apple released has been the first time more information about the solar farm was given.

The massive data center sprawled over 500,000 square feet is a part of the company’s iCloud, the web storage and sync service it released last year. Also inside the facility are the servers that Siri uses to become the premiere voice assistant software in the country. This facility was reported to cost Apple $1 billion to build.

Other details of Apple’s environmental footprint report: about 98 percent of the 23 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions produced last 2011 was related to its products. 61 percent of this came from manufacturing, which includes processing of raw materials and product assembly. 30 percent came from consumer use of their products, 5 percent from product transport and delivery, and 2 percent from recycling.

The last 2 percent not directly related to its products come from its facilities such as offices and distribution venues. With facilities in California, Texas, Ireland and Germany using only renewable energy, Apple estimates about 30,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide related emissions were eliminated.
