How to Deal With Relationship Depression

Depression in relationships is pretty common especially if the relationship is serious and has already been established. This usually indicates that something is amiss in the relationship and that you and your partner are aware that there is a problem but doesn’t know exactly what is wrong thus resolutions are becoming off-target.

It is important that once it has been identified that there is a relationship depression present, that both of you acknowledges the fact and that you are both willing to fix it else it might cause the relationship to crumble and totally fall apart. A lot of good relationships turned bad and sour are due to relationship depression that was unattended and got out of hand.

How to deal with relationship depression should first start with knowing the causes on why a strain would appear in your relationship. The first usual reasons are expectations and letdown feelings. It usually begins when one person is disappointed or let down by the other. May it be a broken promise or having failed expectations – it will let the other person feel as if they are not getting what they deserve thus they become less hopeful staying in the relationship.

Another reason that leads to this silent dilemma is loss of control. In a relationship, one is more naturally dominant and controlling than the other. If this power gets too out of hand to the point where the other person loses his or her own say and decision on basic and delicate situations then the feeling of being insignificant may arise.

Small things from the clothes to wear to the food to eat and to bigger decisions like which state to move into should be discussed fairly and objectively. In a relationship, there should always be an open communication and not just an individual declamation.

Putting your best food forward and pretending somebody you are not just to impress can backfire on you too – in the long run. There are times that on the earlier stages of a relationship, you act as someone that is better than your true self. But as the relationship grows, one way or another, the true you would always surface and usually, keeping up pretenses can lead you to a relationship depression. After all, the relationship is based on a lie and lying alone can cause depression.

With the root causes assessed, you can already ask the question: how to deal with relationship depression. Is it something that you can really deal with? The answer is yes but it requires a lot of patience and open communication.

The first step in dealing with this problem is to talk about it. Be around and ready to talk and listen to your partner. Talking about it is equal to acknowledging that there is indeed a problem. Be honest on what you are feeling and encourage one another to open up as well. Identify both of your misgivings and be willing to compromise. It takes two to tango so both of your enthusiastic and willing participation can make the difference.

The next thing to do is to actually be true to these compromises. Both of you have to keep their end of the bargain since if there would be no visible changes then your talk is useless. Actions and real changes are needed and expected so you can turn around from this destructive relationship depression.

Most importantly, continue to love each other unconditionally. You don’t hate your partner – this is a fact. It is basically the situation itself that is frustrating so blaming one another can cause more damage.

If all fails, then seeking an outside help can be recommended. As long as both of you are aware and willing to make it work, everything is possible.
