Easy Tips for Helping Your Overweight Pet Shed Pounds

Dog On A Diet

One of the biggest dilemmas that owners face today is pet obesity. What’s worse is that a lot of owners disregard the problem thinking that it is totally fine to have a plump pet. After all, chubby pets become undeclared celebrities because people often want to squeeze or hug them. The thing is, when the cuteness overload melts down, health problems will eventually take place.

Like overweight humans, animals can also face the same risks when their numbers in scales go beyond normal. If you do not want complications to lurk around your adorable pet, then you might as well try some solutions to make him shed his extra pounds.

Have your pet checked by a veterinarian

This is not the time to make assumptions. For you to help your pet get back into shape, a veterinarian should examine him and recommend the ideal weight for his age and breed. An animal specialist can also help you in devising a holistic diet plan that will work best for your pet. Having your pet tested will also help you detect if there are impending problems like diabetes or swollen joints.

All types of food including treats must be counted

You might think that a piece of canine biscuit is harmless but if you weigh everything, that piece will surely add in a considerable amount of calories. Recording everything is significant so that your veterinarian can figure out what’s causing your pet to gain weight. You can also self-calculate the calories that you are giving and determine if the total is still in line with the recommended daily intake of your pet.

Increase your pet’s level of activity

Can you remember Garfield? Even if he is a fictional character, his idleness is a true reason why he gets bigger each day. Walk your pet regularly so that he will be encouraged to move around. However, don’t force him to do extreme exercises right away. An overweight pet needs some warming up before they become truly active. You can also give him toys so that he will still have a form of workout even if he stays indoors.

Be devoted in helping your pet

Remember that you are the reason why your pet bulged. Since your pet is not accustomed to having a minimal serving of food, he might show dissatisfaction during the first few days. Don’t give in to his pleading eyes or continuous licking of the empty bowl. It is up to you if you will break his habit or just let him devour things that will harm him.
