How to Let Your Dog Know That You Are the Boss

Dog Tearing Stuffing Out Of A Pillow

Even if you enjoy a cuddlesome relationship with your dog, it is still important to establish your superiority. A lot of dog behavior problems arise because owners fail to demonstrate who the real “boss” is. If your pet is fully aware that you’re still his master, then you will be able to train him in such a way that he will grow up behaved. How exactly can you show that you’re the alpha leader without losing your dog’s affection?

First, always remember that showing who the boss is does not mean that you have to be rude. What you’re aiming for is to make your pet submit to you and not to drive him away. Puppies are generally easier to teach so make sure that you start training your pet early. You may show your dominance by firmly holding your pet while gazing directly to his eyes. Even if he struggles, don’t let him go. Wait for him to relax because this is an initial sign of submission.

Like in children, you have to be very consistent when it comes to discipline. For example, if you don’t like it that your dog is biting your couch corner, stop him whenever he commits the action. There are owners who let their dogs misbehave and reprimand them the next day. If you fail to be consistent, your dog won’t obey you because he is confused.  If you have to say “no” to your dog, use a loud and firm tone. Maintain eye contact as much as possible so that he will know that you are serious.

Give your pet lots of exercise but when you are out walking, do not allow him to pull on the leash. You are the one who must direct him and not the other way around. Providing treats can also be tricky because your dog might have the idea that you’re bowing down to him. You don’t want to spoil your dog too much so give treats only when he deserves it.

Since they are born in packs, all dogs have the tendency to aspire being alphas. They can become very determined and it is up to you if you will let them dominate you or your family members. By being firm, you can forget about the possibilities of bringing up an unruly and disobedient dog. Surely your training won’t go to waste because in time, your dog will be a delight to bring anywhere.
