An Owner’s Guide on How to Tame a Hamster

Teddy Bear Hamster

how to tame a hamster The joy of owning a hamster is certainly immeasurable. However, don’t be fooled by your pet’s fluffiness because hamsters have a reputation of biting people if they don’t feel at ease. Taming this kind of critter calls for patience but don’t worry because your effort will be worth it. Remember that being able to handle your pet automatically likens to a fulfilling relationship with him.

Upon bringing home a hamster, do not expect that he will warm up right away. Hamsters need to have at least a week to become used to his new surroundings. Try to find a quiet spot in your home wherein you can situate his cage. Placing him beside a television is not a good idea for it will ruin the peace that you are trying to establish. Hamsters bite as a form of their defense and they usually do it out of fear. Don’t shower him with affection yet because it will only frighten him more.

After a week, you should constantly let your presence be felt. This can be done by sitting beside the cage and letting your voice be heard. You can read or say a few words to your hamster so that he will get accustomed to your existence. Another step of soliciting your hamster’s trust is by giving him treats while he’s inside the cage. If he does not want to nibble the treat on your hand, don’t force him and instead, just put it in his cage’s corner.

To play with your hamster during this stage, you can let him come out of his cage. Put your hand in his cage and let him approach you. You have the option to wear gloves so that you can protect yourself if he suddenly bites. Allow him to wander around but closely monitor his actions because he might hurt himself by falling. When hamsters feel extremely nervous, there’s a tendency for them to jump. For safety, lift your hamster only when your hand is close to your lap or any soft catching surface like a carpeted floor.

Even if he approaches you for a couple of times, don’t assume that you already subdued his apprehensiveness. Taming a hamster takes time and there is no point in rushing things. The most remarkable thing that comes out after taming is that your pet won’t forget you. Isn’t that a wonderful thing to look forward to?
