If you are one of those who got hooked with one of the longest celebrated movie musical Sound of Music, then you will find a trip to Salzburg to be beyond extraordinary, the Salzburg Austria Sound of Music. Being the birthplace of Mozart as well, the city is dubbed to draw two types of tourist, the Mozart classical music lover and the Sound of Music fan. Yet aside from this, Salzburg has medieval baroque palaces and citadels, and vistas located on the Alps that give a traveler more reasons to visit this famous city in Austria.

One great thing that a Sound of Music fan will find in Salzburg is that the actual locations of the movie are still intact. For instance, the scene where the Trapp family sang farewell and Edelweiss was shot in the Felsenreitschule; a theater that is still used today for musical performances and city festivals. You should also not miss visiting the Leopoldskron Palace which although was not directly used as a set for the movie, enjoys a tranquil location on the banks of the lake Leopoldskroner Weiher. Of course, its late Baroque design is something you should not ignore exploring. And if this is not enough for a Sound of Music fan, then perhaps staying in the actual Trapp Villa will be.

When planning to visit Salzburg, one of the best times to consider is during the months of July and August; this is when the Salzburg Festival or ‘Festspiele’ is held. This five-week long festival highlights drama and musical events enough to satisfy a traveler with great appreciation for music. If however, you’d like to avoid the big crowd, the classical performances that the International Mozarteum Foundation runs from the end of January towards February are just as extraordinary.

Between watching musical performances, there are historical sights, restaurants serving delectable cuisines and a host of nightly revelries to indulge in. Kick-start sightseeing with a tour of the Hohensalzburg Fortress, a medieval castle located in the highest section of the city. The interior is enough to satisfy a sightseer but the view of the Alps at the back and the city below from the front yard can be astonishing. Salzburg by night turns into a vibrant city and a tourist has a choice between rooftop restaurants to beer bars that are a favorite among the locals.

Summer is the best time to visit Salzburg yet the city also plays host to several winter travelers when squares turn into Christmas bazaars and where skiers converge to experience the Alps.
